MotionAds partnered with Pick n Pay ASAP to power their holiday activations over the Christmas and Easter periods. 

These were the pilot campaigns testing MotionAds' capability to offer Activations as our new product offering.

We use our delivery drivers as key activation partners to create novel engagement with consumers, generate a buzz on the streets, and bring greater brand awareness for Pick n Pay ASAP.

And we're ecstatic to say that we rose to the challenge and delighted Pick n Pay ASAP! and the thousands of South Africans who participated in or witnessed the nationwide activations.

Off the back of this success, we're excited to announce that we have added Activations as our latest product offering for all new and existing clients. 

Here's what we did for each of the Pick n Pay ASAP! campaigns. 

Festive Season Santa Suit Activation

The idea

To gain awareness of Pick n Pay ASAP! by spreading festive cheer and helping feed vulnerable people whom the NGO Ladles of Love supports. 

The method

We dressed 30 of our drivers in Santa suits. We then orchestrated for them to come together in a flash mob and drive from the Waterfront to Roeland Street in Cape Town to deliver 90 bags of food to Ladles of Love - each bag enough to feed a family two meals a day for a week.

We also facilitated the drivers wearing the Santa Suits when making their regular deliveries to bring the festive cheer and a nice surprise to everyone they interacted with. 

The results

Real-world impact

This activation provided a massive branding and awareness opportunity for Pick n Pay.

Media exposure

The story got great media coverage and was featured in several media outlets, including IOL, Timeslive, Retail Brief Africa, Cape Town Etc. and the front covers of the Cape Argus and Die Burger.

Easter Hint Hunt Campaign 

The challenge

Pick n Pay ASAP! releases a hint via its social media and in-app notifications in the two weeks leading up to Easter. 
Customers needed to accurately solve the riddle before searching for the product and the golden egg in the app to unlock, or rather 'unhatch', a great deal or free product. 
Pick n Pay wanted to bring greater awareness for their Easter promotion and tie in with their in-app gamification strategy. 

The Pick n Pay ASAP! team was looking for an interesting way to get attention for the promotion, increase participation on the app, and give customers a clear call to action alongside instructions on how to participate in the fun. 

The method

MotionAds fitted hundreds of delivery bikes around the country with custom-moulded booster fins. This moving billboard got Pick n Pay ASAP! great outdoor exposure as thousands of people spotted the Easter bunnies riding on the back of delivery bikes. 

We also boosted the campaign by printing informational flyers and upskilled our drivers on the best practices and behaviours for distributing these flyers - a key aspect to drive customers to the app and participate in the gamified element of the digital campaign. 

The results

MotionAds proved we could handle large-scale, complex, nationwide promotions and run highly efficient and impactful activations. 
Even ones that feature multiple product offerings alongside the driver activations that tie into wider brand initiatives like the in-app promotions. 
It really was a great campaign.

Real-world impact

The first freebie was a tray of hot cross buns on day one, which sold out within an hour of the game launching and resulted in a spike in activity on the app. 
We ran an activation at a local school in which one of our drivers dressed up as a bunny and danced, sang and delivered Easter Eggs from the top-box of his delivery bike.
