During the festive season, BackaBuddy aimed to tap into a growing cultural shift: the increasing demand for positive, meaningful content in a media space dominated by negative news cycles. Rather than adopting a traditional, sales-led approach, the brand set out to connect with people on a more human level - using storytelling to inspire engagement and action. “We see the current rise of value in positive news… especially off the back of all the negative news people are fed all the time.” Said Garreth Williamson, Head of Marketing (EXCO) at Backabuddy.

At its core, the objective was to shift perception and spark emotional connection, reinforcing BackaBuddy’s role as a platform that enables real impact through human stories - and encouraging people to engage more meaningfully with the brand and its purpose.

BackaBuddy needed a way to communicate something inherently emotional - hope, generosity, and community - in a format that felt personal, credible, and intentional. Traditional media channels often lack the intimacy required to deliver this kind of message effectively.

By having our Uber Eats delivery drivers physically handing flyers to consumers, the campaign created a moment of pause - allowing people to engage with the message in a way that felt considered rather than intrusive. “This just gave us a bit of an opportunity to reach a few thousand people and put good news in their hands," says Garreth, "not with the intention to sell, but rather to just highlight good news stories and campaigns."

The addition of a QR code ensured that this emotional engagement could seamlessly translate into digital action, bridging the gap between offline storytelling and online participation.

Solution

MotionAds executed a high-impact, flyer-only campaign across Cape Town, deploying 80 drivers and distributing over 20,000 flyers directly into the hands of consumers. With each driver averaging 250 orders per month, the campaign ensured consistent, high-frequency reach across key areas.

The flyers were designed as story-led engagement tools, each one sharing a real BackaBuddy campaign or piece of positive news - including our own driver stories that were linked to the Heroes Fund, which directly supported the drivers involved in this campaign. By spotlighting real people and real causes, the campaign grounded BackaBuddy’s platform in tangible, human impact, making the message both relatable and compelling.

Beyond distribution, MotionAds played a hands-on role throughout the campaign, providing ongoing feedback, reporting, and support to ensure everything ran smoothly and efficiently.

“From the get-go, you guys were very hands-on. Right through the campaign: the feedback, the photos, the contribution to everything and support from your side to promote our campaign, which goes beyond your immediate line of work and so on. . So I think that that was a massive win for us.” Reflected Gareth. "And then, the data afterwards and getting the full report and the feedback, it wasn't like we just got reports going, 'oh,everything's amazing'. The first feedback was that some of the flyers were behind schedule, but it wasn’t a problem left to us. It was highlighting the problem and saying that 'we'll get this sorted' and, it was...So I think including the data-led feedback as well - it really was a great experience."

Results

The campaign successfully drove meaningful engagement, with users actively scanning QR codes and spending time interacting with BackaBuddy’s platform. Importantly, this engagement was intentional. “There was activity there… it wasn’t the case of them landing there and just leaving.” Said Garreth.

Beyond digital engagement, the campaign delivered a significant uplift in brand sentiment, reinforcing BackaBuddy’s purpose and reminding audiences of the impact the platform enables.

“The campaign left a good taste in people’s mouths… it was a nice reminder about what we’re about.”

As BackaBuddy’s first experience working with a marketing agency, the campaign also validated a new, effective approach to reaching audiences - one that blends physical interaction with digital action. “I think there’s no doubt we would definitely go with MotionAds again.”
